JASMINE CHAVEZ

A dancer and choreographer who uses improvisation to create a movement vocabulary unique to each choreography and dancer. Therefore, my choreography can be seen as quick changes in attention, facing, and dynamics. This includes having quick weight changes with abrupt and sharp facing changes alongside silk like limb movement. These variations create a change of body weight and observations of efforts. My work consists of taking the space available in a given space with the intention to create a cool exterior for the audience to feel as though they are involved in the piece. The calm yet attention grabbing emotions and movement of the dancers creates an energy that ties the audience members to the performers. In current works I am exploring moving through moments of quietness by finding soft movements to conjoin steps taken prior that can be described as opposite dynamics. 

     Learning about the individuals I work with shapes the character I build for them within the choreography. Having done activities such as writing down why you want others to attach certain personality characteristics to them and why they want that. Also creating a safe environment allowing the dancers and I to create friendships outside of the studios. All things led to helping them understand my ideas and prompting them to create the movement quality in collaboration with myself has driven the process of creating that piece into the story it is. My goal is never to take someone’s individualism and specificity of their own style away. My choreography focuses on having moments when a personal connection between the story being portrayed and the audience's thoughts and feelings align.
